Abstract
In order to clarify the much conflicted effect of cortisone and stress on the thyroidal radioiodine release rate, the following experiments were performed.
Albino rats, weighing about 200 grams each, were divided into 4 groups, each received 10 ¥ìci of Na-I131 solution intraperitoneally and then the thyroidal uptake rate was measured at 12 hour interval. When the release curve dotted each value on the semilogarithmic paper, it became a straight line after the following experiments were done.
The first normal group received 1 mg of cortisone acetate twice at the 12 hour interval. The release rate of thyroid I¢¥ll was markedly inhibited.
The second normal group was subjected to restraint for 6 hours twice during a 6 hour interval. The release rate was also diminished during the restraint period.
The third group were adrenalectomized before receiving radioiodine and subjected to the same restraint as group 2. The stress had little effect on the release rate of the thyroidal I131.
The fourth group was hypophysectomized before receiving radioidine and injeccted T.S.H. 0.1 I.U. at hourly intervals throughout the experiment. The administration of cortisone in this group produced no effect at all.
From this data the following conclusions were made:
1. Administration of cortisone, each dose of 1 mg given twice at 12-hour intervals to normal rats inhibits the thyroidal radioiodine release rate.
2. Stress in abort duration diminishes thyroidal radioiodine release rate as well.
3. It is probable that the inhibiting effect of cortisone and/or stress -on the thyroidal radioiodine release rate is manifested through suppressing the secretion of, TSH from the anterior pituitary gland or TRF from the suprahypophyses.
